What We Believe:
The Bahá’í Teachings
The Baha’i Faith is the world’s newest independent world religion and teaches the oneness of God, the unity of humanity, and the essential harmony of religion. Baha’is believe in peace, justice, love, altruism and unity. The Baha’i teachings promote the agreement of science and religion, the equality of the sexes and the elimination of all prejudice and racism.
Just about anywhere you go on the planet, you’ll find Baha’is—the Baha’i Faith is the world’s second-most widespread religion after Christianity, spanning the globe and working to unite it. Baha’is have no clergy or churches, gathering together in democratically-led communities and welcoming everyone.
Our Purpose as Individuals
Bahá’ís believe that the purpose of one’s life is to know and to worship God while we strive to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization. We are committed to the belief that mankind is one family and that the earth is our home. We understand that the turbulence of today is part of a momentous and divinely guided process: the dawning of the Day of God promised by all the world’s great religions.
The Essence of God
Bahá’u’lláh teaches that God is an unknowable essence. God is the Creator and we are part of His Creation. How can something that is created know its creator? How can a painting have any conception of the artist who painted it? How can a table comprehend the carpenter that fashioned it from wood?
The answer for us is that God gives guidance–a way of knowing and worshiping Him–through His divine messengers. At different times and places throughout time, God has sent a series of divine Messengers, including Abraham, Krishna, Zoroaster, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh. They are like perfect mirrors that reflect the light of God. Each of these Messengers has been the founder of one of the great religions. Their teachings guide and educate us and provide the basis for the advancement of human society.
